US printer Williams Printing (WPI) recently built a 20,000 square meter production facility in Rural Hall, North Carolina. Instead of moving the older equipment to the new plant, WPI decided to invest in a complete, updated solution from Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg). This includes everything from prepress to the printing press to the post press with the new volume-based Prrasct Production Manager software Suprasetter 106, a Speedmaster CX 75-5 + L with Saphira consumables, a Versafire EP digital printing system as well as a POLAR jogger and stacker. The Prinect software, service activities and all consumables are part of a volume-based Lifecycle Plus contract – one of a series of printing location contracts offered by Heidelberg.

Like a Formula 1 racing car
As a commercial print shop, WPI relies on quality and customer service and, with its small, agile team, achieves an above-average throughput speed. “We can produce 250,000 folded and shrink-wrapped four-color brochures in two to three days – unlike larger companies that take that long to prepare an offer,” reveals owner Kevin Williams. The latest investments in the new Heidelberg technology in all areas of the company contribute significantly to these fast response times.

WPI installed a Suprasetter 106 with Prinect Production Manager in its prepress department. Thanks to this workflow upgrade, files from the prepress stage can be transferred to the company’s new Speedmaster CX 75 faster than ever before. Thanks to the advanced technology of this Speedmaster press, WPI can achieve makeready times of less than 20 minutes, while its predecessor takes up to 60 minutes to prepare a job for a full run. “It’s like switching from a bicycle to a Formula 1 racing car!” says Williams.

Reliably high end-to-end print quality
In addition to the dramatic increase in overall productivity, WPI has also seen major improvements in print quality. “If we leave a long job in the press, I can be sure that the 10,000th or 20,000th sheet will look exactly like the first OK sheet,” explains Williams. The use of Saphira consumables from Heidelberg, which include everything from inks and blankets to printing plates and cushioning solutions, also contributes to this consistently high print quality. Williams had two main criteria in this regard – optimal print quality at all times combined with a competitive material price, which is part of a volume-based Lifecycle Plus contract.

Comprehensive customer support with a flexible digital printing solution
For the shorter runs, WPI opted for the Versafire EP digital printing system from Heidelberg. This meant trusting other users’ references and moving away from a competing supplier. The Versafire, installed just over six months ago, exceeds WPI’s expectations in terms of productivity, quality and user-friendly operation of the press, which also uses the Prinect Digital Frontend for easier and simpler implementation.

Williams is equally impressed with the technical support Heidelberg provides for the Versafire. “The service concept was a key factor in the switch to a digital solution from Heidelberg.
